The Enchanted Garden

CHAPTER 1

THE FAIRY RING
It all began on a very calm mid-summer afternoon.
School holidays had just started and the long holiday lay ahead.
Bethany had just turned 10 years old and was looking forward
to staying with her Auntie for the Summer.
It had been such an adventure in itself travelling alone on the train.
Mum had packed a lovely lunch for her to eat on the way.
The train had hardly left the station
when she began excitedly opening all the little goodie parcels
all so neatly wrapped.

Firstly, there were peanut butter sandwiches, which were her favourite.
In a small container there were strawberries and whipped cream and last
but not least Was a large piece of fruit cake with marzipan and icing on top.
Stuck to the icing was a drawing made on edible rice paper
you know the sort that melts in your mouth when you eat it.
The picture was of a Fairy in a pale pink dress with a diamond studded crown on her head.
This cake, Bethany thought, looked too nice to eat.

Bethany loved Fairies and longed to see one.
She would sit for hours at the bottom of her garden,
whispering quietly to them, hoping that one day they would hear her.

Did Bethany believe in Fairies? Yes she did, with all her heart and soul.
When the train reached its destination
there was nothing left of the packed lunch and the cake was delicious!
As the train pulled up to the station Bethany looked anxiously through the window
for her Auntie who was to meet her at the station.

Bethany jumped from the train and ran into her Aunties open arms
and they hugged each other.
Auntie kissed Bethany on the cheek and asked her if she had enjoyed her journey.
Bethanys answer was of course yes and she told Auntie how thrilled she was to be staying
with her for the whole of the summer holiday
and she could not wait to see her new house in the forest
which she and her Mum had heard so much about
but had not yet seen.

They walked out of the train station hand in hand
and Bethany was astonished when her Auntie led her up to a horse drawn carriage,
which was like something out of the Cinderella Fairytale
and she hoped that it would not turn into a pumpkin before it reached Aunties house.
They settled themselves into the comfortable carriage and began their journey
deep into the forest to the cottage where Bethany was to stay for the summer.
What an adventure this was going to be.
There would be so much to explore and Bethany felt sure that there must be Fairies
somewhere in such a beautiful place like this.
